ROB AGER - MISSION

Throughout my entire life I've found that awareness of psychology is the strongest determining factor for problem solving. Any problem situation, if broken down and studied, will involve specific human thoughts and actions (or lack of them) as being major contributions to the problem pattern. And so, solving a given problem MUST involve changes in thought (and, in turn, action).

This is divided into two major areas - awareness of one's own psychology and awareness of the psychology of others. And the two are intertwined. Develop your knowledge of one and you inevitably develop your knowledge of the other.

Having been lucky enough to have been encouraged at an early age to explore academic literature on psychology, I was able to overcome multiple early life hardships (details on the BIOGRAPHY page of this site), often through unconventional means. Typically my solutions were found by "thinking outside the box", as they say. In other words, by thinking in new and unconventional ways.

As a result of these experiences I became highly motivated in early adulthood to help others "expand their minds", which is basically a verbal variant on "thinking outside the box". And I got to practice this pursuit with thousands of people when I worked for seventeen years in the "mental health" field.

Since leaving that field and becoming self-employed, my efforts have taken other forms ...

FILM ANALYSIS

A major one is my "film analysis" articles and videos, which now form the largest portion of my published material, and have caught on to the extent of tens of millions of views online. Many who encounter my film studies assume I'm approaching the topic from an escapist, fan obssession position. But from my point of view, movies are not mere escapist entertainment. They are portals into the human mind. They reflect the fears, fantasies and beliefs of the film makers and the audience. They reflect our psychology, the same psychology that governs our behaviour in the real world. In turn, the psychological portal of cinema is a powerful medium for enhancing our awareness of our selves and other human beings. It's as powerful as reading an academic book about the mind. In some ways it's even more powerful because it gets beyond verbal description by simulating our complex real world sensory experience.

For these reasons I use film studies as a means to educate people about human psychology.

SAVING THE FILM MEDIUM

The art of cinema has taken a nose-dive in recent decades. What used to be forgettable new releases (films with poor quality story structure, concepts, dialogue, acting etc) are now held in initial high regard, and often by artificial means. Outright fake online reviews, covertly paid advertizers disguised as reviewers, over-positive youtube comments seemingly generated by either paid shills or bots ... these and other means are now being repeatedly used upon initial release of a film to generate an unjustified buzz for the first few months of distribution. Once the initial box office return has been received, the positive feedback then rapidly disappears and many of the films immediately drop off the cultural radar.

This situation isn't helped by the fact that very few truly good movies are being made today. There's now a broad vaccuum of cinematic quality that allows poor films to thrive for lack of decent competition.

And so, an additional purpose of my film studies is to highlight the best quality films old and new ... to show audiences and film makers the fundamental creative approaches that are required to create such high quality films. My hope is that my film studies can inspire film makers to do a lot better and inspire audiences to reject mind-numbing cinematic garbage in favour of films that expand their awareness of the human condition. To some extent this has been working because quite a few largely forgotten and overlooked classic films have been given a modern day revival by my studies. In addition, I've received a great deal of correspondence from up and coming film makers all over the world who say their approach to film making has been expanded by my work.

INSTRUCTIONAL PSYCHOLOGY

A fair amount of my work also consists of articles, audio files and videos offering "How to" approaches on various psychological challenges in life. Some also offer my own theories on significant psychological and social issues of the day, but aren't directly instructional in any obvious way. While the audience for these works is smaller than my film analysis audience, the feedback received has been equally positive. Respondents have described achieving major changes in their lives aided by incorporation of my materials.

Particular topics that have been important in my work, or currently are, include ... individuality, anger reduction, empathy enhancement, child psychology, complex thinking, hypnosis, problem solving, lie resistance, counter-elitism, dream logic, biosemiotics, sexual psychology, argument theory, systems theory and linguistics.

PRACTICAL HEALTH SOLUTIONS

This has been a more recent endeavour and has so-far been limited to a couple of specific issues ... acid reflux and chronic sinus infection. Both are are long-term physical health problems I had for many years and eventually cured using alternative treatments after traditional medical advice had not only failed, but had made the problems worse in the long run. My videos on these two subjects have received 300k and 100k views respectively on Youtube with very positive reports in the comment sections by people who adopted the same approaches into their health routine.

RAISING THE CREATIVE AND INTELLECTUAL BAR

My holy grail motivation is to help viewers / readers improve their overall thought process in a manner that generalizes across their life experience. As they say, teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.
